Hair day.

Normally, Monday morning is about bleary eyes on the train and trying to reassemble my head in one or two too many status meetings. This week, I took the morning off and had myself a little hair day instead.

I woke up an hour earlier than normal and skipped over to the west Village, where Reagan was getting gussied up with her husband, seƱor photographer extraordinaire Jake, ready to start our shoot. Reagan and Jake are putting together some video tutorials for Hairdresser on Fire showcasing a bunch of Aussie products. I'm very excited that she had me as one of her hair models - even though it was 7:30 in the AM, I think we had a pretty good time.

Side note: I was "split ends" girl. Aussie Split End Protector. I found this to be a combo of mortifying and hilarious, as you've probably witnessed me picking at my split ends like nobody's business on more than one occasion. Typecast.

Finished products are still in the works, but here's a sampling of Jake's stills from the day. I make some really weird faces so don't make fun (I think my fantasy modeling career died a little bit that day).

I was one of five models - here are some beautiful shots of my darling Amanda Blair. I think she might be a real model in disguise. A model shark (similar to a pool shark).

You work that chair, AB.

Despite being completely exhausted that evening, as an end to my hair day I watched Tangled on Netflix Instant. Sir is in London on a business trip (trying to conceal my jealousy), which is when I like to try to muck up his Netflix account with bizarre girly items. I didn't really intend to watch it but I had hair on the brain. I also didn't intend to stay up until 1:30 am to watch the whole thing.

Confession: it was an awesome movie. Completely hilarious and really well done.

Stay tuned for links to the finished tutorial! And New York - stop being so damn muggy so we can have some actual good hair days!

Nations of the world.

When I lived in Chicago and Sir lived in New York, we used to do all kinds of stupid things, like sit up late on video chat, watch this video and try to sing along.

It's close to impossible.

Two years and a life-move later, I had completely forgotten about the Nations of the World game until last weekend, when the world map shower curtain we had bought arrived in the mail.

After hanging it up in all its vinyl splendor, I stood there in the bathroom, looking at the world, when I heard the familiar tune coming from the other room. There was my Sir, playing Nations of the World on the iPad, a giant grin on his face.

In our apartment, with our world map shower curtain.

Do you remember when you were little and your very best friend moved away, and it was pretty much the worst thing that could ever happen to a person? It may as well have been a death sentence. Regardless of whether they moved to a town twenty miles away or all the way to Ohio, you were more or less guaranteed to never see that person again.

It never occurred to my eight-year-old brain that maybe I would grow up to a world wired up to a thing called the Internet, where anyone and everyone can be connected instantly, like it was nothing. Where my friends might take jobs in London, Milwaukee, Vietnam, Boulder and L.A., and I might still talk to them each and every day.

Where moving half a country away might not be the end of the world.

Despite what I know about the internet, when Sir told me he was moving to New York, I was devastated. But as it turned out, New York wasn't so very far away.

Granted, a bit of video chat doesn't hold the same value as being able to meet at the pub between our two apartments, and creeping on facebook doesn't have the warmth of a hug when you need one. But it's definitely a kind alternative to the untimely and dramatic friend-severances of my youth.

It's definitely better than losing someone important when all you need is the Nations of the World to keep you together.

When there are computers and magic available to make the world small, it's definitely better than nothing.

And the whole thing is illusion.

I adore this man. I'm thrilled to have named the cat after him.

Also, some pretty decent, if somewhat overly straightforward advice on acting, and life in general.

Because we won't, in fact, have the script on the night, and we will have to speak the words as though we are saying them for the first time.

Snap.
